Joan Carol and Cliffie with Diane and Charlie Williams at the1990 National Songwriters Guild dinner. Charlie was an actor, deejay, Nashville-based publisher and songwriter. He was the recipient of five BMI songwriting awards as well as a BMI “Million-Air” award for his song “500 Miles Away From Home.” The prestigious Aggie Award was going to Bobby Bare that night and Charlie Williams and Joe Allison were speakers that night. At one time, Charlie ran Cliffie’s Central Songs office in Nashville until he left to become Willie Nelson’s manager; and Joe ran Cliffie’s Central Songs office in Los Angeles. Excerpts from Cliffie’s songwriting book: “Charlie was one of the writers on Bobby’s BMI award-winning song ‘500 Hundred Miles.’ More than 200 of his own compositions have been recorded by many top artists, including Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Dean Martin and Randy Travis. Down through the years, he and his lovely wife, Diane Dickerson, have been my personal security blanket in Nashville’s music circles. One of my favorite Charlie quotes is ‘I know my part,’ which I borrowed from him. Charlie became an actor in the latter part of his life before the good Lord called him home. Whenever anyone suggested doing something, the first words out of Charlie’s mouth were, ‘I know my part.’” Charlie’s TV credits include “Highway Patrol,” “Gunsmoke,” “Wagon Train,” and “Dragnet.” His film work included “Net of Kin,” “Last Days of Frank and Jesse James,” and “The Proud and the Profane.”
